HISTORY IS MADE AT THE OSCARS

Published

Last night was the 93rd Oscars and it was as eventful as ever, with many winners making history. Daniel Kaluuya won his first ever Oscar for best supporting actor for his performance as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Today the internet has been applauding his mother’s reaction, as the rising star made a joke during his acceptance speech to millions: “My mum met my dad, they had sex, it’s amazing. I’m here. I’m so happy to be alive so I’m going to celebrate that tonight.”. The 32-year-old London actor celebrated the night with rapper Dave, who was seen on Instagram hailing his friend.

Film Drama Nomadland scooped up three Oscars for best film, best director and best actress.  Chloe Zhao made history as the first woman of colour and the second woman to win best director (since Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010). Zhao thanked real-life nomads for “teaching us the power of resilience and hope”.

Sir Anthony Hopkins also took home a surprise win for the second time since his win for The Silence of the Lambs. He was awarded with best actor which had been rumoured to go to the late Chadwick Boseman for his role is Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Hopkins took to Instagram to thank the Academy from his “homeland” of Wales, “At 83 years of age I did not expect to get this award, I really didn’t. I’m very grateful to the Academy, and thank you.”

Emerald Fennell made history for Britain at the awards evening, winning Best Original Screenplay. You may recognise Fennell for her roles as Patsy in BBC drama Call the Midwife, or in Netflix’s The Crown as Camilla Parker-Bowles. Her win was for her role as writer and director, however, for Promising Young Woman and she is the first British women to win the award.
